It's 1958, it's the early hours of a dark winter's morning, and Glasgow's pertolheads have gathered in outside the Royal Scottish Automobile Club, in Blysthwood Square, for the start of the Scottish leg of the Monte Carlo Rally.
Mrs Walter Semple, wife of the chairman of the RSAC, is the lady with the Saltire flag, and first off the line is Frank Ward, of Berkswell, in his flashy Jaguar.
Sadly, driving on winter roads, in pre-motorway days, many competitors never made it to the French principality, with some cars conking out even before they'd left Glasgow. For others, it was a marathon run to the sun, and the sparkling water of the Med.
